In the most recent issues of Digital Machinist (Winter 2009 and Spring and Summer 2010), I presented a series of articles on an electronic threading system for the Sherline lathe. Just after my system became functional, I was presented with the need to machine a batch of eight hundred prototype electrical terminals. Although the terminals required no threading operations, the design called for a cross-drilled hole. The newly acquired threading capability made it easier to build the needed drilling spindle that I present in this article. The accessory spindle presented here, though originally intended for drilling, can be used for other operations such as milling and as a tool post grinder. The spindle is designed to use Dremel-style collets, chucks, and other accessories.
